Response: Vitamin E in the News
Vitamin E has been in the news recently as a result of a
meta-analysis published in the Annals of Internal Medicine
that alleged that high-dose Vitamin E may increase the risk
for mortality. Media headlines are not always accurate, and
we believe it is our
responsibility to share with you some additionalinformation
on this study that is not being presented by the media.
Below is information
that comes directly from Shaklee’s Health Sciences
Department.

The first thing that you need to know is that you do not
need to change your vitamin regimen - just follow labeling
directions. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the
Institute of Medicine, which sets recommended dietary
guidelines, have stated that it is safe for adults to
consume up to 1500 IU of naturalVitamin E per day.

Secondly, there are significant flaws and inaccuracies in
the meta-analysis conducted by researchers from Johns
Hopkins University. A meta-analysis is not a new study;
rather, it is a compilation of previously run large-scale
clinical studies. This meta-analysis took a narrow look at
only 19 of the more than 2,170 published papers addressing
the efficacy and safety of Vitamin E.

Jeffrey Blumberg, Chief of the Antioxidants Research
Laboratory at Tufts University, member of Shaklee's
Scientific Advisory Board and a widely recognized expert on
Vitamin E, says, "These investigators selected 19 specific
studies to analyze. In doing so, they also selected not to
employ a vast number of studies that show no harm from
Vitamin E and a great deal of benefit."

In addition, 18 of the 19 clinical studies showed no
increase in the risk for health complications or fatalities
with Vitamin E versus a control group. Only one study out
of the 19 demonstrated a higher risk and that study was
with patients who were using estrogen hormone replacement
therapy (HRT) along with Vitamin E.

In fact, the researchers themselves concluded that Vitamin
E supplementation did not affect mortality, and a number of
the studies in the meta-analysis even showed positive
results.

There are over a thousand studies that demonstrate the
positive effects of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble
vitamin and a powerful antioxidant that has been praised
for its numerous health benefits, including the 2004 study
by Johns Hopkins researchers published in the Archives of
Neurology showing that 400 IU of Vitamin E, taken in
concert with 500mg of Vitamin C, reduced the risk of
Alzheimers by 60%.

Also, a study of approximately 90,000 nurses suggested that
the incidence of heart disease was 30-40% lower among
nurses with the highest intake of Vitamin E. Research found
that the apparent benefit was mainly associated with intake
of Vitamin E from dietary supplements.

The Bottom Line?

The conclusions of the meta-analysis study are sure to be
discredited by statisticians and researchers alike;
however, it’s unlikely that these refutations will have the
same level of publicity.

So What Should You Do?
Continue taking your normal regimen of supplements.
Headlines aside, the majority of scientific and clinical
data shows well-established benefits of Vitamin E for
otherwise healthy individuals. We’ll do our best to
continue to provide the straight and honest story on health
and wellness to help you enjoy a long and healthy life.

Soy Protein – a Doctor’s Perspective
In November 2004, Dr. Nasr spoke in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on
the benefits of soy. Dr. Nasr has a B.S. in Agronomy; M.S.
in Biochemistry of anti-oxidants and a PH.D. in
Pharmacognosy (science of bio-active products). He received
his M.D. from Rush Medical College in Chicago, followed by
Internal Medicine and Cardiology
fellowships from Chicago Medical School. He is a member of
the American College of Nutraceuticals and the American
College of Preventive Medicine and is Director of the
Medical Care & Diagnostic Center, Lake Villa, Ill.

Dr. Nasr uses Shaklee Soy Protein exclusively because it
has the very best and most complete soy protein
andisoflavone content. Here are some of the highlights
from his recent talk. (Special thank you to Kay Beers for
taking notes)

1. Shaklee’s Optiflora and Soy Protein increase the
absorption of protein, decrease gas and discomfort and
decreasecholesterol by 23%

2. Sixty studies have been conducted showing soy protein
increases bone density more than just Calcium Magnesium
does.

3. Two studies show that soy and vitamin E, together,
decrease LDL (bad cholesterol) by 40% and that is 17%
greater decrease than Zocor and Lipitor.

4. Four studies show that soy protein inhibits oxidation
of LDL (bad cholesterol) by 40%. When cholesterol oxidizes,
it becomes “sticky” and in this condition is when it can
attach to blood vessel walls.

5. Soy doesn’t dissolve gallstones, but it prevents them.

6. Soy prevents kidneys from damage. Lots of animal protein
may be hard on the kidneys, but soy protein protects the
kidneys.

7. Shaklee’s protein includes valuable protein and
isoflavones that are not present in other soy proteins
produced with heat or chemicals. Shaklee’s low heat - water
wash process keeps the isoflavones in the protein.
Isoflavones are cancer fighting ingredients that occur
naturally in soy.

8. Soy’s protein and isoflavones inhibit the mutated cell’s
ability to make an enzyme that would cause the cell to
reproduce.

9. Soy inhibits the cancer cell from making the body
provide it with additional blood supply (additional blood
supply is called angiogenesis).

10. Soy increases the killing effect of the white blood
cells (phagocytosis).

11. Soy’s amino acid Lysine, when combined with Vitamin C,
decreases Colon Cancer by 90%.

12. The flavonoids (like those in Shaklee’s Flavomax) when
combined with Soy Protein are synergistic (they work even
better together) and decrease breast cancer 10-fold.

13. Beta carotene (like those in Shaklee’s CarotoMax) when
combined with Soy Protein and Calcium with Vitamin D are 10
times as effective at preventing cancer cells from getting
any additional blood supply.

14. Women in the Orient get about 80mg of Isoflavones a
day. Women in US and Europe get about 1.0 mg., that’s an
80% negative difference for US and Europe.

15. Soy protein helps the differentiated (bad) cell convert
back to a normal cell.

16. Dr. Nasr also listed the several forms of protein and
the length of their chain of amino acids. The shorter the
chain, the more quickly the amino acids can be absorbed and
utilized. Soy has the shortest chain and takes less than an
hour. Fish is next. Chicken takes about 4 hours. Beef takes
about 5 hours. Pork takes about 6-8 hours to digest.

We hope you’ve enjoyed learning about the power soy protein
has built into it. Shaklee’s Instant or Energizing Protein
is one of the best, if not the best, sources of soy on the
market today. Taking it daily provides incredible benefits
for everyone and at every stage of life.

A Shaklee Parable
As we wind down this year with our last news for 2004 we
thought we’d share this wonderful little parable that has
been making the rounds in Shaklee in some form for many
years. We hope you enjoy it…

And God populated the earth with broccoli and cauliflower
and spinach and green and yellow vegetables of all kinds,
so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

And Satan created fast food. And brought forth the 99-cent
double-cheeseburger. And Satan said to Man, "You want fries
with that?"

And Man said, "Super size them." And Man gained pounds.

And God created the healthful yogurt, that woman might keep
her figure that man found so fair.

And Satan froze the yogurt, and brought forth chocolate,
nuts and brightly colored sprinkle candy to put on the
yogurt. And woman gained pounds.

And God said, "Try my crispy fresh salad."

And Satan brought forth creamy dressings, bacon bits, and
shredded cheese. And there was ice cream for dessert. And
woman gained pounds.

And God said, "I have sent you heart-healthy vegetables &
olive oil with which to cook them."

And Satan brought forth chicken-fried steak so big it
needed its ownplatter. And Man gained pounds, and his bad
cholesterol went through the roof.

And God brought forth running shoes, and Man resolved to
lose those extra pounds.

And Satan brought forth cable TV with remote control so Man
would not have to toil to change channels between ESPN and
ESPN2. And Man gained pounds.

And God said, "You're running up the score, Devil".

And God brought forth the potato, a vegetable naturally low
in fat and brimming with nutrition.

And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the
starchy center into chips and deep-fat fried them. And he
created sour cream dip also. And Man clutched his remote
control and ate the potato chips swaddled in cholesterol.

And Man went into cardiac arrest.

And God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.

And Satan created the HMO.

And God looked over the earth and the clean air given to us
to breathe, the clean water given to us to drink, and all
the good food given to us to eat.

And Satan’s handiwork of smokestacks, phosphates, chemical
food additives and single hull oil tankers.

And lo, Man was lost in the easy temptations of Satan’s
making and Man’s own shortsighted choosing.

And Satan saw and said, "It is good."

And God said "enough is enough" and whispered in Dr.
Shaklee's ear and created healthy Shaklee
products—vitamins, herbs and food supplements. Air and
water purifiers, biodegradable cleaners, and natural
personal care products. All made in Harmony with Nature,
utilizing the best of science, through a company committed
to doing business by the Golden Rule. And all shared by
word-of-mouth from person-to-person.

And Satan said, "I can't combat that… UNLESS!
Unless I can just get them to be afraid to share Shaklee
with others!"
